The Yukon Chamber of Mines 49th Annual Yukon Geoscience Forum & Trade Show Community and Member Award Winners Celebrated

Whitehorse, Yukon

The Yukon Chamber of Mines (YCM) along with the Yukon Government recognized the Community Award recipient, the Member Award recipient, and Leckie Award winners in the Legislature on Tuesday November 23 .

Despite the cancellation of the Geoscience Forum and the awards banquet, it is still important to celebrate these exemplary and deserving recipients.

The YCM would like to congratulate BMC Minerals as the YCM Member Award recipient for 2021. As they work through the assessment and permitting processes, BMC continues to show commitment to minimizing environmental impacts and maximizing economic benefits for local communities from their project. Since 2015 BMC has contributed over $13 Million to Kaska First Nations through direct and indirect contracting opportunities, employment and community initiatives. This includes the Kaska Scholarship Program, supporting educational pursuits by Kaska students, that has awarded over 150 post secondary scholarships and high school bursaries valued at over $178,000. BMC has also contributed to the broader Yukon community through financial contributions to flood relief efforts in Yukon in 2021, donations to food banks, support for school programs, and supporting community health initiatives. “BMC has a clear environmental philosophy that focuses on responsible project development that leads to positive legacy outcomes. They set the bar high and are an excellent example of how a modern responsible mining project and company can lead to a greater future for local communities, Yukon and Canada as a whole,” Stated Mike Burke, YCM Director and geologist.

YCM Community Award recipient Glenna Southwick is recognized for her unwavering, transparent and honest guidance on the policies and procedures for staking, recording and filing assessment on mineral claims in the territory, through her work at the Whitehorse Mining Recording Office. Glenna’s dedication to helping people submit completed paperwork the first time saves her clients delays in the future. Glenna has a steadfast understanding of the processes she manages in the Mining Recorder’s Office, but also understands the challenges that people in the industry are facing in terms of the short field season and evolving legal requirements. Glenna’s work with her clients contributes to the advancement of a sustainable and responsible Yukon mining industry. “I can’t think of anyone in the industry that wouldn’t support Glenna receiving this award.

She has been a stabilizing influence in the Yukon Government and a friend to prospectors, gold miners, junior mining companies for decades,” commented Heather Burrell, Managing Partner of YCM member company Archer, Cathro & Associates (1981) Ltd.

YCM would like to also congratulate the Leckie Award winners and thank them for their contribution to a responsible and sustainable mining industry.

“The annual Yukon Geoscience Awards showcase the very best of individuals and corporations and what they contribute to Yukon. This years deserving winners are leaders in Yukon’s exploration and mining industry, and we deeply thank them for their continued contributions,” said YCM President, Loralee Johnstone.
